Dr Siva Gopal Thaiyalan, Queenstown Secondary alumnus of the Class of 1994, has walked a path lit by resilience, learning and service. Today, he serves as a Senior Lecturer at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), where he fosters citizenship education, youth development, and lifelong learning. His journey, from a student of humble beginnings to a scholar shaping national conversations, reflects both determination and gratitude for the values first instilled in him in Queenstown.

His fondest memory of school is simple yet profound: playing football on the fields of the old Strathmore Road campus before and after class. “It was a carefree environment that gave me some of the happiest moments of my youth,” recalls the Manchester United fan. When injury nudged him away from football, he found joy in floorball instead, smiling as he notes that the current principal, Mr Sim How Chong, is also an accomplished floorball player.
Lessons Beyond the Field
At Queenstown, Siva found not only friends but the ideals that would guide his life. The school’s call to “dare to serve” resonated deeply, inspiring his later work in community service and education leadership.

Sports became his lifeline. Determined to overcome weight issues, he began running daily, and soon found his stride. In time, he came in the top in Queenstown’s long-distance running events, a milestone that fuelled his confidence and love for endurance. Today, he still runs 5km to work regularly, proof of the discipline that continues to anchor his days. What started as a necessity grew into a passion, paving the way for him to become a Physical Education teacher.
“Sports gave me the strength to escape the poverty cycle,” he shares. “It wasn’t just physical activity, it was a path to confidence and transformation.”

Yet it was not all about the track and field. English Literature, taught by Miss Madu, was his favourite subject. “She inspired me to think critically and appreciate the beauty of language,” he reflects. Together, the lessons of literature and sport gave him both voice and vision, the foundation of a life in teaching and research.
From Queenstown to Global Classrooms
After leaving Queenstown, Siva pursued studies in Physical Education and Social Studies at Nanyang Technological University. In 2005, he began his teaching career, later serving as a Senior Curriculum Specialist for Character and Citizenship Education at the Ministry of Education. Prestigious scholarships carried him further afield, to the United States and New Zealand, where he deepened his knowledge of youth development and education leadership.

Today, he teaches at SUSS, guiding the next generation of educators and leaders to nurture active citizens. His research examines how young Singaporeans imagine and practise citizenship, and his work is published in leading international journals. Yet amid all these achievements, his compass still points back to Queenstown. “It was there I first learned the value of community. Those early lessons in teamwork and service continue to guide my work,” he says.
Words for the Next Generation
To young alumni, his message is both practical and heartfelt. “Work hard in your studies, but also spend time with friends through CCAs or weekend meet-ups. These friendships are genuine and lasting, and they can become valuable networks later in life, too,” he advises.
Shaped by his own struggles, he offers a philosophy grounded in resilience.
“In the face of adversity, challenges become opportunities for growth and transformation,” he affirms.
His counsel is to trust meritocracy, persevere in securing that first job and then find balance with personal passions once stability is achieved.
Even now, he keeps close ties with his classmates, reconnecting through WhatsApp groups and reliving memories of the old campus. And football remains part of his story. A Manchester United supporter, he is just as passionate about cheering on Singapore football, seeing both as reminders of loyalty, spirit and community.
A Changemaker Rooted in Queenstown
From the football fields of Strathmore Road to lecture halls across the world, Dr Siva Gopal Thaiyalan’s story is one of transformation, anchored in school values. A Singaporean changemaker in education, his life demonstrates that humble beginnings can evolve into lives of influence, and that the lessons of community, resilience, and service learned in Queenstown continue to shape leaders today.
And just as he still runs 5km to work, step after steady step, his journey reminds us that life is not a sprint but a purposeful run. One where perseverance, discipline and heart will always carry us forward.
